We made a post a while ago with some of our favorite addons and such for TF2, but a lot of them have been updated so we’ll mention them again here. And even if you don’t play comp, take a look at these!

The first one is a completely new tool, or website: TF2Demos, started by Cyzer and Casey of EG fame, is going to be the new big resource for finding user-uploaded demos from all over. Although ESEA does provide SourceTV demos for its matches (up to a month still I think), this will be a good alternative for Point-of-View demos and other rarer SourceTV demos. Highly recommended!

The community TF2 HUD has been updated yet again after the engy update, so make sure you get the newest version. For minor updates that break the HUD: simply reinstall the HUD (copy over the resource and scripts folders in your tf2 directory) and that should solve things like ammo count disappearing. Remember to switch between the two available styles by turning on or off minimum HUD mode.

m0re isn’t developing his HUD or config anymore, but it’s still available! Give it a try. Flame also updated the ancient competitive config and its available here, although somewhat out of date. Make sure you look through it and customize it though, there may be a few bugs here and there.

Everyone’s favorite auto-recording plugin, P-REC 2.0.1, is still updated and available here. Just remember to clean out your recorded demos folder every once in a while cause these eat up space if you scrim a lot!

Finally, something for the private servers: SOAP DM 3.0, a deathmatch mod for making pre-scrim waits much more bearable. It’s been recently updated but make sure you have metamod and SourceMod up to date and working as well. These two are general admin and plugin management tools that you can customize your server with.

Here’s the stuff I use:

Mumble. Superior than Teamspeak in every way. Version 1.2 brought lots of nice things as well, most importantly superior voice quality.

PVHUD. A really good HUD that has a auto-update feature. Whenever a tf2 update comes out, all you need to do is run the .exe file, and your HUD updates to the latest version. Excellent for lazy people like myself. Another great feature is the way it shows damage dealt. It displays it above your enemies head, and near the bottom of your screen, above your health. It’s often helpful to be able to glance at damage done on your last shot. m0re’s HUD and communitytf2hud are other great options. Try ‘em all.

tf2compconfiguration A really good all around config. I know some people like to manually code their config, but even if you want to customize your config, this is a good starting place to do so from.  Some of the features I use often are:

  • start-stop demo with f8
  • view ping, interp, loss with f7
  • N to forward spawn
  • autoheal toggle
  • changing interp with – +
  • weapon visibility toggle
  • key bound to rcon_password, as well as the different .cfg’s

POV Record automatically starts recording a demo from your POV when in tournament mode, and both teams become ready. It stops the demo when the game ends. It records the demo with the map, date, and time so you can easily find it later. You can set it so that any killstreaks [user defined number of kills in a life] get recorded with the tick number in a .txt file.

For your server, there’s no reason to NOT have SOAP DM installed. Especially good for warming up while the other team makes up excuses for why their sixth isn’t coming in.

Any tools I’ve missed? What tools do you use?

A couple of small items I wanted to share today. Nvidia has updated its drivers and posted them on their site, hopefully ending that little episode about two weeks ago. I’m about to install these later tonight, hopefully gives us all some peace of mind for a while.

After installing SOAP DM on our scrim server, we’ve noticed that people (ie, our opponents :p) have been sticking around after the end of scrims to get a little extra DM in. I think it’s a pretty neat plugin to make pregame more interesting and the long waits for 6ths to get in more bearable, but the only complaint is that it makes our team go all bloodlust and tunnelvision during scrims for frags by rushing in sometimes without getting buffs or without waiting for the team to push together. Just make sure that you change mentalities once that tournament mode countdown starts :)

And lastly, before I rush off to class, maybe there’ll be a TF2 update tonight? =O People have been posting on the Steam forums saying they have been getting drops with numbers but no actual physical item. I guess we’ll find out in a couple of hours!

UPDATE: yep the TF2 update is live. Check out the new hats and items! I already have a chocolate bar but it doesn’t give you 500HP : ( max is still 450 hahah. I would love to see 500 HP heavies rushing last on 6v6s…

Go lobby!

MangyCarface posted on GotFrag that TF2lobby has been updated! Now people can see if there are ragequitters before the lobby match starts. Ever since it started, the lobby system has been a quick and easy way to get in on a 6s game with minimal organization. The skill level (and douchebaggery level) definitely varies from lobby to lobby, but once you get in on a few and find a bunch of regulars you enjoy playing with, it really is a pretty awesome experience. Hats off to FLOOR_MASTER, former griefer, and MangyCarface the mapper who made yukon, and flame, who apparently, according to sigma, can DM now =O, for getting this project going.

Also, a new interview is up on CommunityFortress with CB, captain of Muscle Milk and Moolians, the darkhorse invite team that will hopefully get to go to ESEA-I LAN finals despite frantically trying to find a sponsor right now. Poor guys, it’s always fun to see an underdog team give the top dogs a run for their money, hopefully it works out for them.

Finally, Lange posted the SOAP DM mod over at GotFrag, so those of you with a private server who want to make pre-scrim waiting a little more bearable can put this on :) Hopefully later on in the month we’ll put up a post about how we got started with our own private server and other administrative tidbits for comp teams just starting out.
