Today (Wednesday) is the first official match of CEVO season 5 for us. Scheduled on badlands vs. Team What! (who we remember scrimming from way back in our reverseHarem days – although I’m pretty sure they’ve had roster changes since then), we’ll be playing at 11:30EST/8:30PST tonight. Badlands has, sadly, always been one of our weaker maps, but we’ve definitely come a long way since we first started out. We have been trying more aggressive strats and faster pushes, but we still choke up when making transitions during pushes.

In the past week though, we seriously considered ESEA after being approached by one of the new admins, Killing, offering us a few (2) free Premium accounts, which is a common incentive the old admins used to use to get more teams to sign up. However, the higher-ups at ESEA (not the TF2 admins, necessarily) are being as strict as ever with everything, and in the end we just decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Not enough competition at our level, plus a map rotation that could definitely use some work (koth_sawmill and cp_coldfront), and the possibility of serious scheduling/roster issues discouraged us from signing up. ESEA requires 2 matches per week, and although we would have dropped CEVO, we realized that we would probably burn out quickly from frustration and scheduling around real life obligations. Just to make things clear: we would’ve loved the challenge of ESEA, and would love to post about our thoughts and experiences going through the league as a low-mid team to share with all of you, but then we would run the risk of spending cash on a league that would end up being more of a frustrating chore than an enjoyable challenge.

So, responding to Leia’s post below about having a team not die, an important thing I’d say is to discuss these things with the whole team if you intend on sticking together for the long term. And of course we’re all still busy as ever – school, work, MOVING UP IN THE WORLD :3 But we always seem to find time for TF2. We are still toying with the idea of finding a solly to complement our roster, and we’ll see how that goes.

Before we start off, a big welcome to our visitors from ubercharged and from reddit! You guys made quite the spike in the visitors graph on our site statistics. reddit folks gave us almost 50 times our regular traffic amount. Rest assured, we’re really a competitive team, just that we have our fun pubbing as well sometimes :D So stick around, maybe you’ll get interested in comp play as well. Check out TF2lobby, check out commFT (links are in the lower-right hand corner in the site sidebar), there are lots of resources around to help you get started.

ESEA Season 6 is now open for registration! Given the current state of TWL, which I also discuss here, ESEA is definitely a good alternative to low/mid teams eager to improve quickly. Registration before 4/2 will nab you the 6 dollars per month premium fee rate; otherwise it’ll go up to 6.95/mo.

On a related note, CEVO is about to start as well! Get those rosters filled. Preseason starts today and runs for 2 weeks (cp_gorge!!! and turbine are the maps), and the regular season starts April 4th. This will probably be the league that our team will focus the most on right now, until TWL starts. Looking through the Amateur Central conference, it seems like we’ll have our fair share of good competition, so it should be fun :)

Lastly, shoutout to AG: great job in ESEA this past season :D Here’s the video that conebone made for these guys -- nothing too impressive, but always fun to watch a frag vid for a team.

Sigma and co. have come up with a new Focus Fire Episode! Now hosted here at www.orztf2.com.

This time on Focus Fire, Jestr, Breather and I take a look at another match from across the pond. From the ESH Sennheiser Challenge Final, we have TCM vs idk in a tight game on badlands. The playstyle of both teams here is surprisingly passive, but the game is good nonetheless. Just remember — never gg until it’s actually impossible to cap last!

In other news, ESEA-I playoffs was the big news of the week(end) for the TF2 community. Complexity (coL) came up on top, but Blight put out a really solid performance, surprising a bunch of people (me included). I think most of the ESEA LAN finals can be summed up with this video right here, featuring relic from coL:

The frag video for the series, as many people have said, is going to be pretty insane (if they actually make one). Some very intense matches too, the demos are up on the ESEA website so go take a look!

Hey all just an update on what we’ve been up to. We decided to keep me on med, and to pick up an active backup solly. We are talking to someone (with experience on a mid/high team) who is interested in filling in for us and helping us out with some strats, but I won’t know for sure until a week or so later. If you still think you’d like a chance at a tryout, talk to me anyways and we’ll try and fit one in for you.

We’ve also been watching the ESEA-O playoff series, with Gpit this week leading to 3 upsets, unfortunately including AG :( Definitely an intense game, most of us were in mumble watching most of the 3 rounds (joining the party late because of a scrim that dragged for a while). Gravelpit is definitely one of those funky maps that benefit from some funky strats – spies, snipers, engies, natasha heavies kritz, suicidal pushes, the whole deal. Also a good deal of airshots because of the verticality of the control points – you gotta get control of the roof at B if you want to have a chance to hold/capture. It was pretty neat to see how different teams came up with their own unique set of tricks to get an edge – sniper picks on med are extremely deadly on B, so be sure to watch both B and C entrances. Panda always reminds us to stand on the C-side cliff while defending B to prevent a lucky sniper from getting a headshot. This also allows you to make them pop uber (if they come from C) early on, and away from the gun that is usually on the shady side of B for defense. We can definitely put up some of our gpit ideas in a separate post too.

MangyCarface posted on GotFrag that TF2lobby has been updated! Now people can see if there are ragequitters before the lobby match starts. Ever since it started, the lobby system has been a quick and easy way to get in on a 6s game with minimal organization. The skill level (and douchebaggery level) definitely varies from lobby to lobby, but once you get in on a few and find a bunch of regulars you enjoy playing with, it really is a pretty awesome experience. Hats off to FLOOR_MASTER, former griefer, and MangyCarface the mapper who made yukon, and flame, who apparently, according to sigma, can DM now =O, for getting this project going.

Also, a new interview is up on CommunityFortress with CB, captain of Muscle Milk and Moolians, the darkhorse invite team that will hopefully get to go to ESEA-I LAN finals despite frantically trying to find a sponsor right now. Poor guys, it’s always fun to see an underdog team give the top dogs a run for their money, hopefully it works out for them.

Finally, Lange posted the SOAP DM mod over at GotFrag, so those of you with a private server who want to make pre-scrim waiting a little more bearable can put this on :) Hopefully later on in the month we’ll put up a post about how we got started with our own private server and other administrative tidbits for comp teams just starting out.

Just a few tidbits about league play and such. Site is now at www.orztf2.com, and we have a twitter feed too, for quick updates on what we’re up to.

Announced a while ago, CEVO is starting up, and we’re probably going to join CEVO-A Central. Interesting to note: there’s a random team in the professional division that I’ve never heard of; anyone else know who they are?

ESEA-O playoff seeds are announced! Rooting for Sigma and the AG guys =O And while we’re at it, the current TWL Div3 playoff bracket shows us going up against Origin IF we manage to make it past Just4Fame :) And after that, my bet is that Spacebots will take it from Target Practice.

We are also still looking for a soldier or a medic to join up for next season, contact us if interested :D
