(Decided to split this post into 2 parts, due to length)

Hey everybody!

When I first proposed this blog I didn’t have a clear vision regarding its use, but so far I’m pretty satisfied with what we’ve done with it. That said, I thought I’d finally try writing something myself. In what’s hopefully the first of a series of post/articles/nerd essays about Comp TF2, I want to cover a range of topics that apply more toward Low and Low/Mid teams – probably not very much regarding strategy, so if that’s what you’re looking for, you might be in for a boring read. Also, the proposed title isn’t set in stone, so if someone has an idea for a series name that’s more related to TF2, that’d be cool.

In my first post I’d like to talk a bit about something that’s proving to be increasingly difficult: actually getting into the Competitive TF2 scene, and sticking around. It’s more or less a checklist of the kinds of things you need to tackle in order to form a functioning competitive TF2 team at the entry (low/low-mid) level. Be warned, a long read follows:

Yes like Panda mentioned below we are indeed on our way back. I was originally going to postpone this until early September since I’m on a laptop with horrible hotel internet for a month, but one high FPS config and a late night scrim made me change my mind. I’ll reveal who’s joining the new roster in a few days once I get confirmations from everyone, but most of the old crew will be back (and maybe that will be motivation to update our About Us page…)!

For those of you interested in the Engy update and some GotFrag drama I’ll try and make some posts later. For those of you interested in comp TF2: give it a try you won’t be disappointed :) CEVO Season 6 is around the corner (deadline is Aug 8th so sign up by the end of the week!), and they’ve already posted a tentative map rotation and weapon bans.

See you all soon!

Hey all, sorry for the lack of updates. Schoolwork has kept most of us busy, and because of summer plans, we don’t plan on playing competitive 6v6 for about 2 months. We may be back in the fall! Although the lineup might be different from what it is now.

In the meantime, you can probably spot us pubbing here and there… :)

Here’s the stuff I use:

Mumble. Superior than Teamspeak in every way. Version 1.2 brought lots of nice things as well, most importantly superior voice quality.

PVHUD. A really good HUD that has a auto-update feature. Whenever a tf2 update comes out, all you need to do is run the .exe file, and your HUD updates to the latest version. Excellent for lazy people like myself. Another great feature is the way it shows damage dealt. It displays it above your enemies head, and near the bottom of your screen, above your health. It’s often helpful to be able to glance at damage done on your last shot. m0re’s HUD and communitytf2hud are other great options. Try ‘em all.

tf2compconfiguration A really good all around config. I know some people like to manually code their config, but even if you want to customize your config, this is a good starting place to do so from.  Some of the features I use often are:

  • start-stop demo with f8
  • view ping, interp, loss with f7
  • N to forward spawn
  • autoheal toggle
  • changing interp with – +
  • weapon visibility toggle
  • key bound to rcon_password, as well as the different .cfg’s

POV Record automatically starts recording a demo from your POV when in tournament mode, and both teams become ready. It stops the demo when the game ends. It records the demo with the map, date, and time so you can easily find it later. You can set it so that any killstreaks [user defined number of kills in a life] get recorded with the tick number in a .txt file.

For your server, there’s no reason to NOT have SOAP DM installed. Especially good for warming up while the other team makes up excuses for why their sixth isn’t coming in.

Any tools I’ve missed? What tools do you use?

UPDATE3: Videos are up check the bottom of the post :)

Yep it’s finally the weekend to go to PAX East 2010 in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center. The TF2 tournament is in the freeplay area on the 3rd floor, starting at 6pm. Details are limited, and it’s hard to tell who’s even going to be there, but it should be interesting to watch even if I can’t find a team to join :D If there’s a decent team looking for a medic or soldier to ring for them, contact me!

EDIT: Updating live from PAX, about 10-12 teams it seems have signed up, mostly casual, (the rest of the pug team I’m playing with hasn’t even heard of competitive TF2 -- ‘can we have 2 medics?’ XD) but I did recognize a few famous faces, see if you can recognize them below! Start-time is delayed until 7PM due to steam issues, I’ll have more photos of some matchplaying later. I kinda wish I had bought a BYOC ticket now, they gave out a free copy of Battlefield Bad Company2 =O and a Nvidia bathrobe…?

UPDATE2: Congrats to ‘Snuggies’ for taking the tournament, 16 teams in total (!!!), with a bunch of (I assumed) PA guys (aka FARTS) facing off against them in the final on gpit (2-0). Snow Bear University had a tough granary match against them in the semis which was a pretty intense game to watch (5-1). The TF2 cosplayers also had a decent pug team going and made it to the semis, sorry I didn’t catch your ingame tags :( The rosters:

snuggies: bulldozer (med), thrasher/breather (solly), carl+(demo), papasmurf/blackymonster (scout)

FARTS: soco (med), blackbeard/enders (solly), rak (demo), goose/ducom (scout)

SBU: shifta (med), lorcas/tyir (solly), sgt.duck (demo), teech/panzer (scout)

Overall I think it was a very smoothly run tourney (except for some steam issues in the beginning). Despite many people not having played comp 6v6 before, everyone seemed like they had a lot of fun, and the comp players had their good games in the later runs. There were quite a few chuckles when it was announced that cp_well was the first map, and that an admin had to be present to watch you turn mouse acceleration off, but I think it was a pretty big success, with 16 teams signing up in the end. Double elimination would have been fun, but would have taken quite a long time :)

And now for more pictures and videos after the break!

Just my honest opinion about the current state of the TWL league. I’m not trying to be a whiny complainer, its just that I would really hate to see this league slowly die after gaining plenty of momentum. TWL was the first league we got into, and it has been a lot of fun for the past 2 seasons. But recently it feels like there are things that could be improved with the league, which should be changed IMO if they want to maintain themselves as a viable option to CEVO and ESEA but for lower-end teams.

Are we going to have to wait another month or more like last season for the admins to stop ‘being busy’ and ‘wait for the div1 teams’ before we can start? It would be nice to have a little more communication from the admin folks. I mean you guys have been doing a great job, I still remember TrainRiderJ himself joining our first ever TWL qualifier match in Season 4 to resolve some issues. The discussion threads about map choices and unlock bans are great too, but it’s been over a month since those were started. There was also talk about integrating TF2lobby for stat-tracking, but that discussion went nowhere as well. Just thinking that maybe its time to bring in some people to make the scheduling and communication a little faster and smoother.

It’s obvious you guys can’t compete with ESEA in terms of drawing in the top teams with prizes, but what you guys CAN do (and did do for a while back then) is making it a much more enjoyable process for all the teams by making sure everyone has fun, solid competition, and that everyone’s opinions (not just a certain few ‘admin friends’) are taken into consideration when deciding on league issues. As of now, no high-level team (and by this, I mean mid+) will consider joining TWL on top of the 2 matches a week for ESEA and possibly another one for CEVO because there is no incentive at all, despite all the complaints about ESEA scheduling, the client, and CEVO map rotation. Even among the lower-end teams I sense frustration with not having a clear answer on qualifier scheduling and team placements, with multiple threads and posts in the forums.

So what do I suggest doing? 1) Get new admins, or get more admins. You guys are too busy and don’t seem to care as much anymore, it’s the sad truth. Get people who are actually passionate about running a league, people who are involved with teams, who have played in the league before. 2) Putting out a schedule (even if it’s a rough estimate) on when the season will start. 3) Get all qualifier matches scheduled, NOW. 4) Place all teams from last season into their proper divisions, start preseason matches for these teams. 5) Get rid of Division 1. You aren’t going to attract any high level teams, and most mid teams are already in div2. Keep them there or call it div1 and change the division numbering for 3 and 4 as well.

and lastly what I think is the most important: 6) ADVERTISE. Talk to commFT people, post on GotFrag, tf2f, other community forums and websites. There is an explosion of low/mid teams right now, as well as low teams just starting out, and you could easily fill 5 divisions of them if you wanted to. Get people to cover the leagues, post the coverage on the forums or on other community sites – not everyone in the community only cares about ESEA-I, just like how people care about college and high school football too. The thing is, you have get the word out, and to give these low/mid teams a reason to stick around and stay interested.

Yard of middle cap point for cp_freight

A lot of people probably are familiar with the map cp_freight – it’s a popular map, often played in competitive 6 vs 6. It is unique, though, in that the final version of the map, cp_freight_final, which can be found here at FPSbanana, is actually NOT the version commonly played. Most people agree that the changes made to the last and 2nd/4th point were unnecessary, which is why it never really caught on. Most leagues and servers use cp_freight, the previous incarnation, for their map rotation. Given that it is not the official final version, there are only scattered uploads of the map across various sites; for those of you trying to find it, we are now hosting cp_freight here, click HERE to download. :D

So if cp_freight is so great, why was it updated? Three main reasons, which are somewhat linked: 1) there are serious issues with the respawn time for defenders at last, 2) you can shoot rockets through the top part of the garage doors between 1st and 2nd caps, and 3) the nature of the point layout, somewhat like freight, and also because of the spawn times, means that it is nearly impossible to push out and retake 2 from last, unless you have a clear man advantage and start capping before the attacking team can get their spawns up, which like granary is only a short distance away.

Sigma and co. have come up with a new Focus Fire Episode! Now hosted here at www.orztf2.com.

This time on Focus Fire, Jestr, Breather and I take a look at another match from across the pond. From the ESH Sennheiser Challenge Final, we have TCM vs idk in a tight game on badlands. The playstyle of both teams here is surprisingly passive, but the game is good nonetheless. Just remember — never gg until it’s actually impossible to cap last!

In other news, ESEA-I playoffs was the big news of the week(end) for the TF2 community. Complexity (coL) came up on top, but Blight put out a really solid performance, surprising a bunch of people (me included). I think most of the ESEA LAN finals can be summed up with this video right here, featuring relic from coL:

The frag video for the series, as many people have said, is going to be pretty insane (if they actually make one). Some very intense matches too, the demos are up on the ESEA website so go take a look!

I mentioned before in our looking thread that while we’re all usually the most lovable and chill team you could find, we do have our moments in scrims where we get frustrated and ragey at each other. Case in point: a few days ago we needed modopo and Leia to fill in, with Baldy on soldier to get a scrim in. That’s already 1 of us off-classing, plus modopo, having scouted maybe a total of 5 scrims before, was not very familiar with his expected role, and Leia wasn’t exactly warmed up. The map was badlands, the scenario – our initial push to mid, and our push onto spire from mid.

Hey all – sorry for the lack of posts and such – homework (and being a TA) has been keeping me busy; I haven’t even touched TF2 in 2 whole days (I know right, isn’t that horrifying). Today I just wanted to mention a couple of server things on our end, for those of you who might not yet have your own private server for competitive scrims and matches.

The FF podcast had an episode with some information on maintaining a 24-slot server; I just wanted to reiterate a few things from them. I personally use HLSW occasionally when I’m not ingame yet and want to change up the map or the password without booting up TF2 or getting into AIgaming’s control panel. The rest of the time, just hop ingame (if you’re not already) and use rcon to change settings, quick and easy. As for FPS and tick and all that: 500 FPS. You won’t regret it. 1000FPS is only necessary to make people shut up when they complain about how crappy the server is.

We run a 500FPS Team Fortress 2 server from AIgaming, and I’m not going to lie: I am 99% satisfied with it. We’ve had minor blips in downtime (once every month or so), and only one update wouldn’t install immediately in the past 5 months. The rest of the time, smooooooth and stable. If it ever gets choppy, restart the map (worst case, restart the server), it should get rid of the choppiness that results from having the map/autorecord on for a long time. It’s a 14 slot server + SourceTV, which is enough for 6v6 plus one in-game spectator for each team (and as I learned recently from Sigma, you can even kick the STV temporarily and it’ll come back when you change the map). We pay ~32 dollars a month for the whole package; split that between 6-10 people and it’s definitely worth it.
